Abstract

Winner, 2018 Outstanding Contribution to Scholarship Book Award presented by the American Sociological Association's Section on Race, Class, and GenderHonorable Mention, 2018 Distinguished Contribution to Research Book Award presented by the American Sociological Association's Latina/o Sociology SectionHow Latina teachers are making careers and helping students stay in touch with their roots.Latina women make up the fastest growing non-white group entering the teaching profession at a time when it is estimated that 20% of all students nationwide now identify as Latina/o. Through ethnographic and participant observation in two underperforming majority-minority schools in Los Angeles, as well as interviews with teachers, parents and staff, Latina Teachers examines the complexities stemming from a growing workforce of Latina teachers. The teachers profiled use Latino cultural resources and serve as agents of ethnic mobility. They actively teach their students how to navigate American race and class structures while retaining their cultural roots, necessary tactics in an American education system that has not fully caught up with the nation’s demographic changes. Flores also explores the challenges faced by Latina teachers, including language barriers and cultural acclimation, and professional inequalities that continue to affect women of color at work. An unprecedented look at an understudied population, Latina Teachers presents an important picture of the women who are increasingly shaping the way America’s children are educated.Winner, 2018 Outstanding Contribution to Scholarship Book Award presented by the American Sociological Association's Section on Race, Class, and GenderHonorable Mention, 2018 Distinguished Contribution to Research Book Award presented by the American Sociological Association's Latina/o Sociology SectionHow Latina teachers are making careers and helping students stay in touch with their roots.Latina women make up the fastest growing non-white group entering the teaching profession at a time when it is estimated that 20% of all students nationwide now identify as Latina/o. Abstract

"From 2000 to 2010, the U.S. Latino population increased by 44 percent. It grew even more--by more than 73 percent--in eight out of twelve midwestern states over the same years. This interdisciplinary anthology of essays examines the history, education, literature, art, and politics of Latinos in the Midwest in view of the demographic changes experienced by states in this region with growing Latino populations and the recent immigration raids in the Midwest. Through brief readings on topics ranging from immigration to labor history and expressive culture, the anthology sheds light on the region's history, as well as its cultural dynamics, population shifts, and social movements based in labor, religion, and civil rights."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

This timely practical reference addresses the lack of Spanish-language resources for mental health professionals to use with their Latino clients. Geared toward both English- and Spanish-speaking practitioners in a variety of settings, this volume is designed to minimize misunderstandings between the clinician and client, and with that the possibility of inaccurate diagnosis and/or ineffective treatment. Coverage for each topic features a discussion of cultural considerations, guidelines for evidence-based best practices, a review of available findings, a treatment plan, plus clinical tools and client handouts, homework sheets, worksheets, and other materials. Chapters span a wide range of disorders and problems over the life-course, and include reproducible resources for: · Assessing for race-based trauma. · Using behavioral activation and cognitive interventions to treat depression among Latinos. · Treating aggression, substance use, abuse, and dependence among Latino Adults. · Treating behavioral problems among Latino adolescents. · Treating anxiety among Latino children. · Working with Latino couples. · Restoring legal competency with Latinos. The Toolkit for Counseling Spanish-Speaking Clients fills a glaring need in behavioral service delivery, offering health psychologists, social workers, clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, and other helping professionals culturally-relevant support for working with this under-served population. The materials included here are an important step toward dismantling barriers to mental health care.

Abstract

For 300 years, Franciscans were at the forefront of the spread of Catholicism in the New World. In the late 17th century, Franciscans developed a far-reaching, systematic missionary program in Spain and the Americas. After founding the first college of propaganda fide in the Mexican city of Querétaro, the Franciscan Order established six additional colleges in New Spain, ten in South America, and twelve in Spain. From these colleges Franciscans proselytised Indians in frontier territories as well as Catholics in rural and urban areas in 18th-century Spain and Spanish America. This work studies these colleges, their missionaries, and their multifaceted, sweeping missionary programs.

Abstract

"Hispanics are less represented in the federal government workforce than in the U.S. civilian labor force, and they are particularly underrepresented in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) civilian workforce. Although previous analyses have demonstrated that Hispanics are underrepresented in DoD, research has not yet considered employment barriers for Hispanics across DoD agencies. In this report, the authors provide information that might help DoD address Hispanic underrepresentation in its civilian workforce. They examine trends in Hispanic employment in the DoD, non-DoD federal, and civilian workforces. They also explore whether DoD labor-force characteristics might account for Hispanic underrepresentation in DoD. In addition, the authors examine observed trends in job applicants and applications to DoD. They also present findings from interviews that they conducted with DoD hiring managers and supervisors and representatives of Hispanic-serving institutions. They conclude with recommendations for DoD to consider as part of its efforts to address Hispanic underrepresentation in the DoD civilian workforce"--Publisher's description.
